New Years Resolutions and How to Stick to Them

New Year, New You‘… Right?

Whilst January is a time for all of us to re-set our lives and evaluate what we want to change for the new year – beginning with shifting those Christmas pounds! – it’s estimated that only 8% of people will actually stick to their Near Years Resolutions.  It’s time for us to consider why, and fix this worst of all bad habits!

With the end of 2017 in sight, we can’t help but reflect on the past 365 days, and begin to re-set our lives and our goals in the hope that the year ahead will mark a new chapter for us.

Quite predictably, we all tend to favour those New Years Resolutions that revolve around exercising, weight loss, and healthy lifestyles – and it’s obvious why.  Because in our eyes, achieving any one of these goals will help us become the most beautiful, attractive, and youthful image of ourselves.  We’ll be happy, successful, and look drop-dead gorgeous.  (But, most importantly, we’ll have lost the pounds we gained during Christmas after eating countless mince pies and drinking 5 glasses of mulled wine a day!)

But are we setting ourselves up for failure?  With an estimated figure of only 8% of people actually living up to their New Years Resolutions, do we need to change the way we think about these goals altogether?


Where Are We Going Wrong?

In a recent BUPA study of 2,000 people, over half of the participants said they weren’t confident that they would stick to their New Years Resolution, and 1 in 5 said they believed they had set themselves overly ambitious goals.  So, where are we going wrong?  

According to experts, the solution is simple – plan.



(1) How Realistic?  


People set goals but don’t determine how they can achieve them, it is claimed.  Before you decide what goal you would like to set yourself, consider…

“How realistic is it that this goal will fit into my current schedule?”

If you feel that your goal is overly ambitious, then maybe tailor it to suit your current work/life balance.  Don’t stretch yourself so thin in order to achieve a goal that other areas of your life begin to suffer because of it.

Have a realistic approach and understand the complex realities of introducing a totally new routine to your already busy life!



(2) Make Sure You Can Measure It

No, this doesn’t mean that your goal has to revolve around weight loss or physical measurements.  It just means that you need to make your goal more specific.

“…if you can’t measure it, it’s not a very good resolution because vague goals beset vague resolutions.”


For instance, instead of thinking:

“I want to run faster”


“I want to be able to run a 7 minute mile by June”

This will not only make your goal more tangible, but it will also allow you to take more satisfaction from your goal as you record yourself making gradual progress!


(3) Publicise Your Goals

Admittedly, this option isn’t for everyone.   But in an age where most people report their daily actions on blogs and social media sites,why not consider letting people know how to plan to improve your life for the next year?

You never know, it could attract more people who are looking to change their lives in the same way – and thus create a community where you support and look out for one another!

Or, it could simply add that extra pinch of pressure you need in order that you see your goal through.




(4) Be Patient

Don’t set yourself a goal that serves to be a quick fix.  ‘Six week beach abs’ just aren’t a thing – as much as we might want them to be!  Real change proves to serve us best if we work at it slowly over a low period of time.


“It’s not enough to just decide you’ll stop…It requires conditioning.”




So be patient with your goals, and accept that sometimes life just takes over.  In these moments, forgive yourself for not sticking to your plans, and keep working to commit your goal to the bigger picture!
